Herb Alpert – This Guy’s in Love with You

Herb Alpert - This Guy's in Love with YouTo quote a yarn from Wikipedia…

The original recording originated when Herb Alpert asked Burt Bacharach, “Say, Burt, do you happen to have any old compositions lying around that you and Hal never recorded; maybe one I might use?” Alpert said he made it his practice to ask songwriters that particular question; often a lost “pearl” was revealed. As it happened, Bacharach recalled one, found the lyrics and score sheet, and offered it to Alpert: “Here, Herb … you might like this one.

It seems Herb did like it. The single was his first #1 hit. And just look at the love in the eyes of Herb and his first wife on the single’s cover! Maybe it was the suit/shirt/tie combination…

This transcription includes the harmonica lines played with harmon mute. I chose to play the gentle solo on flugel rather than trumpet as Herb did.

  1. Gary,

Thank You! This is Amazing to me. I’m 72 and played cornet in high school, unfortunately, not since. I don’t remember being very good. In the 60’s, till about 1971 I played keyboards and guitar in a 5-piece band that played top 40 back then. We were pretty good. I went out on the road after that in early 70’s and early 80’s doing a single with the keyboard and guitar. Had a lot of fun and met a lot of great people.

I haven’t played since then and put everything in storage to collect dust. I am now retired from an assortment of varied careers. None of which made me rich. I am going to attempt to play again. Maybe make some money to help with this unbelievable inflation. LOL. I have collected a couple of trumpets, saxophones and even a violin through the years that I ran across at a thrift store or pawn shop for a real bargain. I thought maybe I would have time to mess with upon retirement. LOL, I don’t know where time goes. There never seems to be enough. My wife expects me to watch TV with her all the time. I understand where the term “Idiot Box” came from.

I tend to babble on and on, Sorry! Any way I purchased a real nice Yamaha PSR SX900 a few years ago just for this endeavor and just now getting around to making things happen. The keyboard has 16 tracks for midi and thousands of voices/styles/rhythms etc. It will allow me to play my guitar and hopefully some trumpet along with it. I read music but not proficiently and I am sure I will need to transpose much of any sheet music I use since I will be playing the songs in a key, I can sing in. I have not sung in 40 some years either so wish me luck with that.

As I write this I am listen to George Michael (You Have Been Loved) Its beautiful. I have never heard it before. I noticed it in your song list. I am working on “Jesus to a Child” by him.

I hope to do a single playing locally within 100 miles or so for all types of places playing everything From KC and the sunshine, Santana, Nat king Cole, George Jones, Michael Bublé to Dua Lia and Herb Alpert. Hope I can learn something and start playing before I drop dead. LOL

Didn’t mean to take so long in this comment but figured you might be interested in the person that is using your work.

It is appreciated. Thank you once again. I will probably download things that I think I might use or songs that I am currently working on. I will let you know when/if I actually start playing out again.

    Gary
