The Beatles – Lady Madonna

This classic Beatles song wasn’t written to include a trumpet. Not that that’s ever stopped any trumpet players before! But the Beatles did sing “fake trumpet” lines as backing vocals. So here we get to play those on real trumpets, as well as muscle-in on the sax lines.

And as luck would have it, I was asked to play this song twice within about 12 hours!

  1. This is very hard to hear in the full recording but if you listen to the backing vocals on their own (you can find isolated tracks for most Beatles songs on YouTube which are SUPER helpful for transcribing/arranging) the 2nd to last note in the 4th measure of letter D and in the same note the 12th measure of letter E in your arrangement is sung by the Beatles as B natural in the top part and A in the bottom, not B natural and G as you have written. This tight harmony creates a little “crunch” as I like to call it and, in my opinion, adds a teeny bit of subtle interest to the part 🙂 Just something to consider.

Cool idea having real trumpets play those backgrounds- I’m curious how that would sound with a full band!
