Louis Armstrong – What a Wonderful World

Whenever I hear Louis’ original vocal recording I always listen for the accompanying trombone parts. Or maybe those lines are played by a French horn? Not sure, but they’re subtle and understated, sitting perfectly amongst the strings and cradling the beautiful vocals.

So here are those trombone or horn lines, transcribed for flugelhorn. Difficult to hear with complete clarity, but it’s pretty close.

Simon & Garfunkel – A Hazy Shade of Winter

One phrase in the whole song. Played twice, and it was stolen from the keys. LOL.

Make it count!

I remember back in the day The Bangles covered this song. Their arrangement was virtually the same, only the “trumpet” phrase gets played once. 😦

Kirsty MacColl – In These Shoes

Kirsty MacColl recorded this song in 2000. It garnered airplay in the U.S., was covered by Bette Midler and featured in the HBO show Sex and the City. After MacColl’s tragic passing it was adopted by Catherine Tate as the theme tune for her BBC TV show and featured on the soundtrack to British film Kinky Boots.

Bryan Ferry – This Is Tomorrow

Good news!

I’ve updated my 2018 transcription with some minor tweaks and articulations, as well as an added chart for tenor sax.

Handbags and Gladrags – Stereophonics

The Office UK - Opening Sequence

I’m a big fan of the BBC TV series The Office, starring Ricky Gervais. So I was very pleased to have the opportunity to transcribe and play Handbags and Gladrags, the theme song which plays over the opening sequence of each episode.

Unfortunately, Bandhub went offline before this recording could be finished.

The transcription provides for oboe feature (with alternate soprano sax chart), trumpets, and flugelhorns (in “quasi-French horn” mode).

Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics – It’s About Time

It’s about time. That time may be 12/8 or 4/4. I wasn’t sure which, so my transcription takes the easier path.

A very nice slow-burn for trumpet and tenor sax playing in unison, with complimentary flugelhorn and enough grace notes to fill your daily quota.
