The Cure – The Love Cats

I do like it very much when I get the opportunity to play a song that I’ve always known in my head but never played before. Awesome to play along with a double bass too. There’s so much to love about The Cure from this time!

This chart includes 3-part harmonies for trumpet.

Unfortunately, our recording of this song was not completed before Bandhub went offline. So I’m afraid I can’t provide you with a demo of me playing the chart.

Jocelyn Brown – Somebody Else’s Guy

This big band horn section chart was expertly transcribed by my Bandhub buddy Max Savary-Leblanc. Max is a very talented tenor sax player from France, and we have played together on a number of recordings.

Included are parts for alto (2), tenor (2), baritone, trumpets (4), and trombones (2).

Pilot – Magic (a.k.a. “It’s Magic”)

From the treasure trove of one-hot wonders came this little beauty. I’ve known it forever thanks to radio airplay, but it was only when I studied it for transcription did I realize how little there is for the horn section! Still, a joy to be able to play it.

Awesome video editing by Shawn, too!

The Panics – Don’t Fight It

Nice song from an indie Australian band. This transcription includes two-part trumpet harmonies and a flugelhorn feature, as well as a trombone part.

Paolo Nutini – Iron Sky

Charlie Chaplin - Final Speech from The Great Dictator

A very interesting rock song by Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini. I’ve seen it described as a “slow burner”, which I think is accurate. The trumpet and tenor sax parts are major contributors to this through building and repetition (which was very enjoyable to play, although started to labor on my chops after a while).

The song was a minor hit upon its 2014 release in the UK but was re-released with greater success in the Netherlands early 2015 following the Paris shootings at the Charlie Hebdo offices. The original recording features an excerpt from Charlie Chaplin’s final speech from the 1940 movie The Great Dictator and its strong condemnation of the political dictators of the time. The audio from that speech was sampled and included in our Bandhub recording too, for completeness.

The Blues Brothers – She Caught the Katy

An iconic song that needs no real explanation. Consistent with the Blues Brothers line-up, charts for trumpet and 2 saxes are included.

My sincere thanks to good buddy Paulo Golin for identifying all of the sax harmonies for inclusion.

Earth, Wind & Fire – In the Stone

Some of my transcriptions started their lives as MIDI files, like this one. I extracted the trumpet lines, made it human-readable and adapted it for use. Somehow, starting with a computer-generated file feels entirely appropriate for an Earth, Wind & Fire song, because those guys can play trumpet with computer-like precision!

And…. sometimes I get lazy.

The Four Seasons – December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)

This classic pop song pops-up often. There’s not a lot for the horns in the original version, which made it very quick and easy to transcribe. Here are charts for trumpet and tenor sax, true to the original.

Blood, Sweat & Tears – You’ve Made Me So Very Happy

A gorgeous song! This transcription was based on a horn section arrangement found online, but it contained errors and was not in the original key. There was also a gap that I needed to transcribe from the original recording.

This version corrects errors and restores the key, so what we have are horn parts that align with the BS&T original plus additional harmonies for a nice fat horn section sound. Includes 4 x trumpet and 2 x tenor sax parts.

Ridsa – Avancer

One for the French speakers. I don’t know what this song is about, but it was nice to play the keyboard “brass” sound on an actual brass instrument 😀
