Red Hot Chili Peppers – Pretty Little Ditty

This instrumental piece is said to be an “eclectic” contribution to the 1989 RHCP album Mother’s Milk, but as an experienced trumpet player, I feel well qualified to say its pretty elementary and unimaginative stuff.

Anyways, I was asked to play it so I did. And now you can too. The transcription is rough, but so too was the source performance.

Glen Campbell / Jimmy Webb – Wichita Lineman

Prolific songwriter Jimmy Webb wrote the material behind Glen Campbell’s most successful songs including Wichita Lineman, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Galveston, and Where’s the Playground, Susie?

This song is easily my favorite, although a lot of that has to do with a version recorded by the Daly Wilson Big Band as part of a Jimmy Webb Medley. But here we revert to the sweet French horn sounds of the original recording, transcribed for flugelhorn and trombone.

After Glen Campbell’s passing, I had the opportunity to record this twice in quick succession. Both times with some great musicians.

Johnny Cash – Ring of Fire

From what I gathered upon hearing the vocals to this song, poor old Johnny went through hell!

I fell into a burning ring of fire,
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

Holy shit! Luckily, he survived to sing about it…. 🙂

Maroon 5 – Sunday Morning

I’m not sure there’s much doing for trumpets in the original recording of this great song. So I borrowed a riff from the sax and added some flugelhorn harmonies to the final chorus, to help fatten out the sound a little.

Colin James – Just Came Back

A great 90s hit for Canadian rocker, Colin James. But I got to play this with an even better Canadian rocker! 😉

Tenor sax plays in unison with trumpet on this one.

Hawaii Five-O (as performed by “No Nonsense”)

This is the Hawaii Five-0 theme as recorded by Melbourne, Australia, ska band “No Nonsense” in 1984. It differs considerably to the original TV theme arrangement and includes a spoken-word break. Although I’m usually a traditionalist I really love the groove of this version, featuring surf guitars and keys, and I knew we could make a really good go of this on Bandhub.

And this collab celebrates one year since I was last in Hawaii, my favorite place on the planet. 🌴

This was a lot of fun!

Robert Michaels – Sunchild

A very nice Spanish Guitar reggae-influenced piece. With the right guitarist to play along with (as I was fortunate enough to have), this simple chart was a pleasure to play.
