Brian Bromberg – Mr Miller

Another score and horn section charts transcribed by my very talented friend, saxophonist Max Savary-Leblanc. This piece is an amazing feature for highly skilled funk bass players.

Update, January 2026:

A more complete chart, including one of my earliest solo transcriptions, was sleeping peacefully in the deep, dark depths of my hard drive. I’ve woken it up for you.

If you’re after the trumpet solo as originally recorded, you might want this copy of The Budos Band – Mas O Menos trumpet chart with Solo Transcription. Enjoy!

Christopher Cross – Ride Like the Wind

I was reading that Christopher Cross said he was on an acid trip when he wrote the lyrics to this song. You’ll be pleased to know that I was not when I transcribed the 3-part trumpet harmonies for this nice chart.

Lulu – You Win, I Lose

Lulu - You Win, I Lose

Lulu’s proud B-side to her 1982 single If I Were You seemingly never made the leap from LP and Cassette to CD.

This song was a new discovery for me. And what a photo!

Nice funky groove and a trumpet chart with mostly high staccato notes. Check it out!

Simply Red – Holding Back The Years

A great example of interference by a record company to make a song sell. When I was first asked to play this and determined that I needed to transcribe it, I found the source track (single version) to be hopelessly un-tunable. The notes were somewhere in the quartertone zone and couldn’t be played with my tuning slide anywhere near a “normal” position. As I dug deeper I discovered that all instances of the single version on YouTube were like this.

When I played the longer album version of the song I found it to be the exact same recording, but at a slower tempo and a playable key of A minor. I’m sure this isn’t unique; a record company increasing the speed of a song (tempo and key) in order to find that $$$ sweet spot.

This is a note-for-note transcription of the trumpet part as played on the original Simply Red album version. Good luck, if you ever need to play along with the single version!

Frank & Nancy Sinatra – Somethin’ Stupid

This chart for flugelhorn represents the French horn lines from the original 1967 hit.

And the video above represents some beautiful performances in tribute to the 50-year-old original recording.
